Derby Fashion

The KentuckyDerby is synonymous with style and glamour.  Even today fans still dress in their finest for the race.  Men’s fashion is just as important as the women.  Wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is believed to bear good luck!

Women wear wide brimmed, “Southern Belle” inspired hats.  The hats are usually decorated with flowers, bows and ribbons of any color that express creativity and individuality.

  1. Well this was fun to read about!
I grew up watching the races with my grandfather. He always brought me for good luck and would have me pick out the horses I thought would be the winner. I watched the races again over the past five years and have attended Derby parties with prizes for the best decorated hats. They've always been a blast to go to!
One thing that I've noticed about these events is there isn't much advertisements to entice people to go to it, at least not if you don't live locally. I think there's a large percentage of middle age women that would love to make a girls trip out of going to the Derby. Women are always looking for fun weekend getaways with their friends and they could definitely increase viewers and attendees by promoting this.
I think they also would do well targeting a younger demographic of Millennials. They need to start branding and increase the engagement of the younger demographics to ensure that there is continued interest in racing in the future. They could offer special incentives and promotions or contests to try to attract this group of people. Not only do those in their 20's love winning contests, but they certainly would love a mint julep also!

  2. This was fun to read. I have never been to a horse race and you taught me a few things. I have heard about them, but never been or even known anyone that had gone. I think that if they advertised, even on social media, then they might have a greater turnout, not just the same people they always expect to get at the races. If the younger generation knew more about the horse races, they might feel like they want to see what they are all about.
